Pennsylvania Background Check Requirements
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires that all volunteers, age 14 and older, who are, “responsible for the welfare of a child or having direct contact with children” complete mandated state and federal background checks and receive a Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance in order to work with children. To comply with state law, you will need to initiate the following three background checks for yourself. Clearance requirements need to be renewed every five years. NOTE: Volunteers pay no cost for PA Clearances #1 and #2 below. For Item #3, if the volunteer has lived in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 10 or more consecutive years, then a Disclosure Statement may be signed in lieu of registering for an FBI Criminal Background Check and Fingerprinting. You can access a copy at https://www.pennsylvaniafca.org/pa-background-checks under “PA Volunteer Resident for 10 years.” If the volunteer does not qualify for the Disclosure, then the volunteer must register and pay for the FBI Criminal Background Check and Fingerprinting.
